Great stuff. What I took from this story was that the lawyer is clearly embarrassed at having to say this in public, hence he keeps talking about 'his instructions'. When a defence lawyer wants to point out injustice they talk from their own standpoint. When you know your client is an arse, you explain to other folk what 'your instructions' are.
